QotD: A Tip About Tipping

What's your method for calculating a tip?

For an average meal, I mentally begin each server with a $5 tip. It goes down each time they do something that bothers me, yet they can also earn that amount back depending.

For example, I'm a heavy coffee drinker. If I have to call over my waiter a couple of times to refill my coffee, then they've lost a dollar on their tip. If I have to request basic condiments (like butter, salt, sweet 'n low, etc..) they've lost another dollar. And so on. However, if they go out of their way to argue with a cook for me or stop me when I'm about to order and point out that if I order it a different way I'll save some money.. then they've gained back some of their tip.

I have the exact same system - it works equally well if each person at the table starts with $5 and then tosses in their part when the bill comes. It worked very well once when we had eight people and each only ordered a coffee or something similarly inexpensive. The service was expectedly good, being for simple requests, so the entire $40 was paid on a $20 bill. From then on, whenever we went back to that lounge we got preferred seating and VIP service. Sweet!
